Seoul (Reuters)-It is well received as a major victory for democracy in Korea. After 16 years of exile, the president returned to victory this week to take his legitimate seat in front of the scented cereal box.

The limited edition of Chex Cereal led to a campaign of enthusiastic fans just two days after visiting the online store.

The road to the grain aisle began in 2004 when Kellogg's Korea launched a light marketing campaign for five grain cereals, Chex, asking Koreans to vote for new flavors.

TV commercials provided two cartoon nominees for the chocolate-flavored Cheki and the pa-flavored Chaka in the Chex Choco Empire presidential election.

The PR stunt ended with an easy win by Sweet Cheki. But people disagreed.

Votes for Chaka surged more than votes for Cheki, so they didn't get Kellogg's awareness. The company cited multiple individual votes, stopped online voting, threw duplicate votes, and declared Cheki the winner.

Chaka fans, shouting fouls, expelled Cheki's 16-year reign as the rule of an illegal tyrant. Chaka maintained mass consciousness through regular hashtags like #PrayForChex and memes depicting onion characters as free fighters.

“We didn't expect consumers to be interested in this product for more than 16 years,” said Kellogg's South Korean spokesman, Hee-yeon Kim, to Reuters. "Every time we launch a new grain or have a promotional event, the online community will repeatedly ask for a taste."

Chaka's success has skyrocketed to become the most popular topic in South Korean social media since North Korea blasted the South Korean liaison office on the day it was announced earlier this month.

A fan wrote on Twitter: “Cheki's cheating has been freed up and Prime Minister Chaka's 16-year struggle is finally over.

In a TV ad apologizing for the delay, a small child whose dreams of onion cereal crumbled appeared. The promotional materials include fake political posters with images of Chaka on the campaign slogan of former US President Barack Obama.

Limited-edition grains are usually sold for about three months, but with a high volume, they can be extended, Kim said. The company has been working on grain development for 15 years, but struggled to find the right onion flavor. When I asked for 50 “early tasters” I got more than 14,200 applications.

Traditional Korean breakfasts are often tasty and spicy, and many seem to think of the onion flavor as a potential snack with beer, not a milk bowl.
